The Vast Expanse

All this space.
All this space, and yet we still crowd.
All this space and yet we still feel claustrophobic.
All this space, yet we’re still mentally crowded.
All this space.

I’ve grown a newfound appreciation for wide-open spaces, the ability to see the horizon, stretching for miles. An appreciation, for wiggle room, for space to stretch your arms, to move without bumping into someone or something- to breath. The vast expanse, if you will.
You might be wondering, what on Earth is this man talking about?
What on Earth would give you an “appreciation for space”? And to that I say, not “what” on Earth, rather “where” on Earth. The answer to that, is Dhaka, Bangladesh.

As almost all of you *don’t* in fact know, I spent the former part of this year in Dhaka on an internship, filling hours as a prerequisite to my degree. And man, was I in for a shock.
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has approximately 23,200 people per square kilometer, making it one of the most densely populated places on planet Earth, and it really shows.
You can’t walk 2 steps without bumping, knocking, or running into someone. It is honestly fascinating because even if you try to avoid the crowd, you will get run over by one of the million hot-headed motorists. It’s astounding, to say the least.
